Ganesha: The Playful Protector
Spirit of Cambodia Cultural Alliance at the Ganesha: The Playful Protector Media Preview with Tianlong Jiao (left), the exhibition curator and Khom Sreymom, the Cambodian Museum and Government Representative along with local news media. What an amazing opportunity this was for us! Thank you for allowing us to view pieces of our culture and be a part of this event! #denverartmuseum
You’re invited to see Ganesha: The Playful Protector, on view at the Denver Art Museum from October 1, 2017 to October 28, 2018. This exhibition is developed in collaboration with the National Museum of Cambodia in Phnom Penh, which is loaning a statue of Ganesha created in the 600 to 700s that is the centerpiece of the exhibition.
The 29-inch tall cross-legged figure, featuring human arms and an elephant head, is known as one of the earliest Ganesha icons in mainland Southeast Asia. This significant pre-Angkor artwork will be on view along with sculptures, paintings, and textiles from the DAM’s own collection of ancient to modern representations of the Hindu deity. Ganesha has crossed both geographic and religious boundaries, inspiring numerous representations throughout the Asian subcontinent over time—all of which will be surveyed in the exhibition to showcase the iconographic changes of this popular god.
General admission to the Denver Art Museum is free every day for kids 18 and younger, and is free for all visitors on the first Saturday of each month. We hope you will visit to see this exhibition soon!
